The questions to ask before connecting two systems

Data ownership, retries, and failure states deserve attention before the first API call.

Decide which system owns the truth

For each shared field, define which system can change it and how those changes reach the other system. Ambiguous ownership can turn routine synchronization into conflicting updates.

Design for interruption

An integration needs a response to timeouts, partial completion, and repeated requests. Identify operations that can safely be retried and give important events a stable identifier.

Make failures visible to the team that can resolve them. A clear record of what happened is more useful than an unexplained generic error.

Test the uncomfortable paths

Test an expired credential, a duplicate event, an invalid payload, and a provider outage. Confirm what the customer sees and how the team restores the workflow.

Document the operational responsibilities alongside the implementation so the integration can be maintained after handover.
